Sweet Parting
I wouldn't normally start the newsletter with sad news, but I'm going to make an exception as we prepare to bid farewell and bon voyage to one of our most prominent team members, Johan De Bruyn. Johan has been the Golf Professional at Pinnacle Point Beach and Golf Resort for more than three years and during this time has made a lasting impression on both members and fellow colleagues alike. Personally, I have an image etched in my memory of that unforgettable time when Johan dressed up as a "lady" for our mixed golf day and created quite an extraordinary impression on the men in the field!
Johan started at PPBGR fresh out of Damelin College and took up his first role of Assistant Golf Professional with total enthusiasm and professionalism and those qualities are displayed, in abundance, every time he steps out onto the course. Having qualified earlier this year as a PGA member, his desire was to extend his experience and knowledge within the golf industry. He has elected to move abroad for a warmer, less windy climate and take up the position of Operations Manager at new Gary Player designed golf course in Abhu Dhabi.
Johan is a determined and exceptional individual who has an eloquent aspiration to make his mark in this world and I
believe he will be a significant asset and forge great relationships in his new role. From everyone at PPBGR and especially myself and Wayne, we would like to wish him all of the best for his new and existing future. Johan departs at the end of September and members wishing to say good-bye are encouraged to contact him beforehand.
Orange infiltrates the Southern Cape:
The Southern Free State Golf Team toured the Southern Cape last weekend and played at Mossel Bay Golf Club, Outeniqua at Fancourt and, of course, PPBGR. Our league team hosted the side in foursomes and singles match play game and the teams consisted of eight. Ruben Barnard, our league Captain, was so confident of success that he made provision for an old hand like me to join them for the big game!
With the wind abating until late afternoon, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone. Not wanting to to wallow in their loss, the visitors took full advantage of the bar facilities to sweeten their defeat and promised to return next year for another chance to sample the course, the competition and the camaraderie. A big thank you to the Pinnacle team for playing like true champions and for making the visitors feel like they never left home!
The greens and the blacks:
I'd like to extend a big pat on the back to PPBGR's hardworking maintenance staff for their commitment and continuous effort to enhance the greens which have been affected this winter. Whilst the greens are not yet 100% recovered, they are showing real signs of improvement. We've heard much about "black layering" but with careful and specific maintenance practices, we have fortunately seen a drop in the amount of black and an increase in the amount of green
Sale! Sale! Sale!
Having just bagged myself a couple of great bargains, I feel inclined to remind you not to miss out on the crazy Pro Shop sale currently on at PPBGR. Many winter items are being sold for ridiculous prices in preparation for the placement of summer stock. We've had members phoning in from as far a field as JHB to keep certain items aside, so don't think that just because you are not in the area, you cannot enjoy the benefits!
