What makes the playing surface at Pinnacle Point so different from other golf courses? What is costing you shots from being short or over the green that will make or brake your round? Pinnacle Point is unique with its narrow and sloped fairways and by understanding the theory and technique behind certain shots, your game will improve rapidly.

The Uphill Lie

In general, the ball will fly higher and usually shorter than normal due to the fact that the lie in effect adds loft to the club being used. You should expect to see the ball travel with hook spin on it due to the effect the slope has on the body motion, arm and club through impact. Always play with the slope.

Club selection: A less lofted club is needed due to the extra loft that the slope creates.

Aim: Aim more to the right of the target, the slope will create hook spin and the ball will go to the left for a right handed player and to the right for the left handed player.

Grip: Should be taken as normal

Ball Position: Nearer to the higher foot (front in your stance)

Swing: A normal swing should be made, due to the setup position taken on the slope, the transfer of weight and rotation of the body in the downswing will be restricted and the arms and club will rotate more quickly, resulting in the clubface being more closed at impact. Before you swing the club, more weight should be placed on the lower foot, this help to swing the club freely with the slope.

The Downhill Lie

The ball will fly lower, usually hitting the ground sooner and rolling more than normal. There will be more slice spin on the ball.

Club selection: A more lofted club will need to be chosen.

Aim: The upright plane will encourage more slice spin to be applied to the ball so the aim should be to the left of the target to allow for it.

Grip: Should be taken as normal

Ball Position: Ball will be positioned closer to the higher foot than normal in order that the club head can follow the contours of the slope and create the desired angle of approach.

Swing: The pupil should be encouraged to trust the loft on the club and swing down the slope rather than failing backwards in an effort to get the ball airborne.
